It doesn't make sense to put somebody else in temporarily while he's out, put Tim back in for a bit, and then he leaves. Once he'd return, they'd still have the same problems. The reality is, Tim wasn't happy at his job, Howard probably wasn't happy with his work, and he was going to need to be away for months, maybe even a year. Beyond that, the basics are the same: his parents are dying, he says he thinks he's going to need to take leave for a long while, and the meeting ends with him leaving.
The second story doesn't include that he already had taken a lot of time off, that he wasn't happy at his job, and adds that Howard was the one that suggested they should split.
